BERKELEY CALLING BLOG: Buffalo Roadshow Report! Inspiring, deep, awesome!

The Buffalo Field Campaign Roadshow brought co-founder Mike Meese to Fellowship Hall in Berkeley, CA along with event organizers Karen Pickett of Earth First! and Vic Sadot of the BFUU Social Justice Committee.

Musically, the 2016 BFC Roadshow featured two acts: Mignon Geli and Karaj Lost-Coast. Karaj Lost-Coast opened with a charming original composition to guitar called “Headlands”. It is a reflective patchwork of memoirs beginning with how odd it seemed to have wild bison in Golden Gate Park in the heart of San Francisco.

The headliner was Mignon Geli on the Native American flute. Mignon gave an articulate and heartfelt explanation of the roots of each song, be it original or traditional or experimental, such as “Native Blues”, “Stampede”, or songs from the Nisenan tribe of the Nevada and California hills.

As a long-time lover of ballads and broadsides, I love the way some people like Phil Ochs, Buffie Sainte-Marie, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Joan Baez, Patrick Sky, Peter La Farge Patrick Sky -The Ballad of Ira Hayes (Peter La Farge) and countless others, so effectively set up their song for delivery. It’s a talent that Mignon Geli has, in addition to her soulful instrumental talents. Matter of factly, she’s been heard to say: “The Black Hills are NOT for sale!” See her BlackHillsAreNotForSale.org biographical link below if you like these performances and if this multi-dimensional cause strikes a chord with you!

After Vic Sadot, an activist with the Social Justice Committee does a welcoming and promotion of upcoming SJC October 2016 events, Karen Pickett takes the stage to explain the vision and modus operandi of the Buffalo Field Campaign.

The Buffalo Field Campaign “Roadshow” came rolling through the SF Bay Area with founder Mike Mease presenting his stories and videos from years of engaging this project to protect and preserve the wild buffalo and the environment we all need to survive and thrive. Part of Mike’s talk was captured to a cell phone video, which is posted to this “Social Justice in the Heart of Berkeley” YouTube channel.

This is Mignon’s 4th tour with the Buffalo Field Campaign Roadshow. She met Goodshield Aguilar because he was touring with the roadshow, and they went on to do some great collaboration! Although Goodshield Aguilar was not on this 2016 tour, his music and spirit are most definitely are a big part of this sound. See the several links below to know the work of this soulful musician, Mignon Geli!
