Project Censored interviews William Pepper, King Family Attorney, on the evidence at the 50th Anniversary of the Murder of Martin Luther King

The Plot to Kill King” – Project Censored Radio Show on KPFA PACIFICA in Berkeley, CA 4-06-18. Mickey Huff and Ken Burroughs of San Francisco University interview William Pepper, author of three books about the Murder of Martin Luther King. https://kpfa.org/player/?audio=282877

William Pepper explains that he met Dr King because King wanted to speak with him about his reporting from Vietnam, particularly due to his photos published in Ramparts Magazine in 1967 showing the effect of the war on the children of Vietnam. Pepper got to know the family as a result of his first book in 1995, Orders To Kill. The King family and William Pepper visited James Earl Ray in prison. They were convinced that he was not the killer. They came to believe that he had not acted out of racist hatred toward MLK, but rather as a patsy in a large conspiracy involving criminals in and out of government. Efforts to get a new trial and medical help for James Earl Ray failed, and he died in prison.

The King family decided to file a civil trial in Memphis in 1999. William Pepper was the lawyer for the King family in their civil trial victory at which a unanimous jury of 6 whites and 6 blacks convicted former Memphis cop Loyd Jowers and “unnamed government co-conspirators” for the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Pepper’s second book was released in 2003 on Verso Books. It tells about what came out in the trial and was put into the public historical record. The transcripts from the trial can be read at the King Center website.

My song highlights some of the most disturbing items that came out in the trial, and my video used the photos from that book with permission of William Pepper. The song bears the same title as the book, “An Act of State: The Execution of Martin Luther King”. The recording with Eric Golub on violin from the 2016 “Truth Troubadour” CD was aired on this program from 17:34 to 22:20 on Project Censored – The Plot To Kill King 4-06-18.

William Pepper is the author of three books about the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. The interview moves on to discuss what he discovered in his third and last book, which was published in 2017 by Skyhorse Publishing. The third book is titled The Plot to Kill King: The Truth Behind the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.”

William Pepper claims that an enormous amount of additional information has been gathered since the second book published 15 years earlier. Project Censored Guest Host, Ken Burroughs asks Dr. Pepper about the new revelations about how Dr King died that are in his last book. Dr. Pepper names the shooter as Memphis cop Frank Strausser. He names the doctor in the hospital who smothered Dr. King under a pillow as Dr. Breen Bland. He tells the sources for this information. He names other “co-conspirators” who were already named in his last MLK book.

William Pepper was the keynote speaker at the annual 9/11 Truth Film Festival on 9-11-17 in Oakland, CA, which is sponsored by the Northern CA 9/11 Truth Alliance. All the films and speakers were live-streamed and archived by No Lies Radio at their Vimeo channel. Note from William Pepper to Vic Sadot for writing this song about his second of three books about the murder of Dr Rev Martin Luther King, Jr. The re-make video with Eric Golub in the studio soundtrack was done in 2013. The master-mix of the song was finally released on Dec 19, 2017 on the “Truth Troubadour” CD at CD Baby:
Thanks so much for the effort you and others are making in the common struggle to air the truth about how this Republic, and each one of us, lost Martin. Thank you for taking the time to put some important history into a ballad. This, of course, is the role of the Balladeer without whom much of history would be lost, especially in our time with the consolidation of control of the mainstream media. I am grateful.” Bill Pepper

Subject: Shameful Day for KPFA! Censorship Free Speech Radio style!
To: pd@kpfa.org, pnb@pacifica.org, gm@kpfa.org

The censorship of Bonnie Faulkner’s independent and internationally respected “Guns and Butter Radio Show” is absolutely inconsistent with the concept of free speech radio and the great Pacifica radio tradition of fighting censorship. All the more shameful when it is in the middle of a California citizens struggle against Big Pharma’s press to get legislation to make expanded regimens of vaccines mandatory! Which side are you on?

A public apology and explanation to the KPFA community is in order. The show and the premium she has selected should be presented at the next earliest opportunity, ie Let it go on next Wednesday’s show!

In solidarity with Bonnie Faulkner and her internationally esteemed radio show, we have just added the KPFA censored movie to our documentary playlist “Health Care Truth and Justice for All” in the “SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE HEART OF BERKELEY” YouTube  Channel. Get on side of the people’s right to control their own bodies!

Silent Epidemic: The Untold Story of Vaccines – Full Movie – Directed by Gary Null (1:48:05) Published on Nov 11, 2013 at Gary Null YouTube Channel. Now video #13 in the “Health Care Truth and Justice for All” playlist in the “Social Justice in the Heart of Berkeley” YouTube  Channel. “Silent Epidemic, by award winning film director Gary Null, is the first documentary to investigate thoroughly the true medical record and the historical evidence about vaccine marvels. Conventional medicine has herald the invention of vaccines as a miracle of modern science. It claims that vaccines have been proven to prevent and eradicate infectious diseases. We are told that vaccines are safe and effective, and that “herd immunity” can be achieved if a high percentage of a population is vaccinated. However, does the science support these claims? Kru

“Simple Song of Freedom” – Truth Troubadour Vic Sadot update of the Bobby Darin 1969 classic anthem to struggle released under license on “9/11 Truth & Justice Songs” available on CD Baby. The song was actually a hit for Tim Hardin in 1966, and Tim Hardin’s “If I Were A Carpenter” was a hit for Bobby Darin. Great American songwriters!

New “Truth Troubadour” Blog Salutes the Work of Tod Fletcher

Titled “A Hearty Salute to the Political Awareness Work of 9/11 Truth Activist Tod Fletcher”, the new article was posted at Truth Troubadour Blog by Vic Sadot. It features many links to the work of Tod Fletcher on radio and in writing. There is no doubt that Tod Fletcher would want to be remembered as the major researcher, writer, editor, and speaker that he was in the global 9/11 Truth & Justice movement. Tod was an editor for David Ray Griffin books. He occasionally was a stand-in for Griffin when the acclaimed theologian and 9/11 scholar could not make a radio interview due to illness.

There will be a Memorial Gathering for Tod Fletcher and his wife Susan Peabody who chose suicide over continued suffering. See Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists Social Justice Committee Facebook Event Listings for the Memorial Gathering for Tod Fletcher and Susan Peabody scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22 from 1-4 pm. Some people will skype into the event, such as David Ray Griffin and Elizabeth Woodworth who worked on scholarly projects with Tod Fletcher. http://www.facebook.com/events/508202625950001

Tod’s last interview on Bonnie Faulkner’s “Guns & Butter” Radio Show on KPFA was on Sept 3, 2014. It is archived at KPFA and at NoLiesRadio (link below). The lives and the passing of Tod and his wife Susan do indeed make a sad and difficult story. But it is also a story of true and dedicated love.

See the link to the moving tribute by David Ray Griffin: “In Memory of Tod Fletcher: A Life of Service (1952-2014)” David Ray Griffin in Global Research (Centre for Research on Globalization) 10-08-14. In that article David Ray Griffin quotes the late-great 9/11 Truth scholar Tod Fletcher in GlobalResearch.ca: “Having sensed earlier than most of us the falsity of the government’s explanation of what had happened on 9/11, he said: ‘I never fell for the official explanation. I’ve been researching and writing about 9/11 since 9/12’.”

A devastating and tragic oil train derailment, explosions, and intense raging fires came crashing into the little town of Lac-Mégantic, Québec, Canada on the night of July 6, 2013. In the aftermath, citizens from the town began to find their collective voice and to organize themselves. One of them spoke in Richmond to a large crowd at the Barry Bowers Center in Richmond, CA on March 1, 2014.

Marilaine Savard told the story and showed photos from her home town tragedy. An unattended 74-car freight train transporting the most volatile of crude oil was parked at night on a steep incline a few miles from town. Somehow the train’s brakes failed and it ran away and picked up speed until it derailed as it took a curve in the center of the quaint little town located in the Eastern Townships of the Canadian province of Quebec. It’s very close to the border of Maine and next to a beautiful lake also named Lac-Mégantic. The train derailed, resulting in such intense fires and explosions of multiple tank cars that it killed 47 people who were “vaporized”. More than 30 buildings in the town’s center were destroyed turning the quaint Québec town into an inferno and into a wasteland. See the photo from before above and the photo after below.

Such was the story told by a young mother named Marilaine Savard from Lac-Mégantic, who fate cast as the spokesperson for the people of the town’s effort to respond to Big Oil and it’s conduct of criminal neglect and irresponsibility. Marilaine Savard was emotionally distraught at times. Yet she was stalwart and inspired by the outpouring of good will and “Solidarity” that she received from her new-found friends in the Chevron Oil Refinery town of Richmond, California. If any California town can feel for Lac-Mégantic it would be Richmond, which has suffered the effects of the huge oil refinery in its midst.

Marilaine Savard, spokesperson for the Citizens Committee of Lac-Mégantic, Québec, was in the San Francisco Bay area for about a week of local speaking and organizing for alternatives to the fossil-fuel industry as well as to tell the story of her community. Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin gave a fiery speech and read a formal Solidarity Proclamation from the City of Oakland to the city of Lac-Mégantic.

Mayor McLaughlin is part of the Richmond Progressive Alliance which has transformed Richmond from an oil “company town” to a leading city standing up to Wall St bank foreclosures and Chevron corruption and pollution. Her second term as mayor is currently dealing with the aftermath of the damages for the August 6, 2013 Chevron refinery explosion and fire that resulted in 15,000 going to the hospital.

Publicity for the event stated that “Fossil Fuels are a disaster, from fracking and tar sands extraction to transport in rail cars, pipelines and tankers; to refining; to burning; to climate change-caused drought, heatwaves, fires, floods, and super-storms that are wrecking our communities and planet”. The panel addressed questions related to this theme: “How can we move from “Not In My Back Yard” (NIMBY) to “Not On Planet Earth” (NOPE)? How can we STOP fossil fuel disasters and START fossil-fuel free solutions?”

Release the Cleared Prisoners and Close Guantanamo Prison!

Berkeley City Hall “Hunger Strike Solidarity” Rally says: “Release the Cleared Prisoners and Close Guantanamo Prison!” Rita Maran Reiterates Official City Welcome of a Cleared-Detainee to Re-settle in Berkeley.

Cynthia Papermaster of Berkeley No More Guantanamos and Code Pink Golden Gate Chapter 5-21-13 Press Release: “A Gathering to Declare that “Berkeley Says NO to Indefinite Detention and Torture!”

Marking 100 days of an ongoing hunger strike by Guantanamo prisoners, Codepink, Berkeley No More Guantanamos, and others gathered at Old City Hall in Berkeley to hear from City of Berkeley Peace and Justice Commissioner Rita Maran (Sunday, 5-19-13). Rita Maran spoke on behalf of City Council member Linda Maio about the critical life or death human rights situation for Guantanamo prisoners. Rita Maran talked about the standing October 2011 Berkeley City Council Resolution welcoming cleared-for-release detainees to settle in Berkeley using private funds. She addressed the concern that Congress lift the current ban on their entry to the USA. Janet Weil of Code Pink spoke for an end to this ongoing madness.

Cynthia Papermaster of Berkeley No More Guantanamos spoke about the 86 cleared-for-release prisoners still in Guantanamo – up to 7 years after their cases were dismissed by the Bush and Obama administrations. She announced a “Guantanamo Freedom Fund Pledge Drive” for donations to pay expenses such as psychiatric care, housing, food, etc. for the prisoners who will be invited to resettle in Berkeley. The crowd was thrilled to welcome U.S. torture policy architect “John Yoo” (bubble-head actor), a tenured professor at UC Law School and darling of the Wall Street Journal, the Tea Party, Young Republicans, American Enterprise Institute, and the Federalist Society. Mr. Yoo, played to the hilt by Toby Blome, handed Ms. Papermaster a giant “check” pledging $250,000 to help cleared-for-release Gitmo prisoners with living expenses in Berkeley. Papermaster told Yoo she appreciated the donation, but that she still hoped he would be prosecuted for his unethical, illegal and immoral role in torture, destruction of civil rights, and pre-emptive war.

Vic Sadot, Chair of the Berkeley Fellowship Social Justice Committee spoke about our need to stand here to express the conscience of Berkeley and US citizens. He led the crowd in singing “Tell John Yoo That Torture Is A Crime”, a song recorded with the Code Pink Golden Gate Chorus and released on 9/11/11 on a CD titled “9/11 Truth & Justice Songs”, which is available at CD Baby and for which a video was made using photos from David Swanson’s WarIsACrime site.

All attendees were invited to write postcards to the illegally held Guantanamo “detainees” (prisoners), to President Obama to ask him to use his authority to free the cleared-for-release prisoners, and to write to John Yoo to mock-thank him for his generous pledge to help the men that he conspired to torture by writing bogus legal briefs to justify the use of torture, and to violate the Geneva Conventions, which are by treaty also the law of the United States.

This Guantanamo Hunger Strike Solidarity Action and the issue of closing Guantanamo peranently was the lead story on the Berkeley-based KPFA evening news that day. That segment begins at 2:32 and ends at 8:00 on this archived recording): http://www.kpfa.org/archive/id/91701

BERKELEY CALLING! “Inviting Gitmo Detainees to Berkeley”

Rita Maran explained the Berkeley Peace & Justice Commission proposal to the City of Berkeley, and why it was passed. These “indefinite detainees” have been tortured but were never charged with a crime. Many have been cleared by the Bush and Obama administrations. But the advocates of a “war on terror” need some real life people to populate that policy. They apparently prefer to conduct their “war” outside of US Constitutional law, due process, and habeas corpus rights established by Magna Carta. The prisoners known in the corporate media as “detainees” have been kept from their families for 11 years and counting. This is not American justice! Guantanamo torture testimony was used in the 9/11 Commission report to support the “official conspiracy theory” that 19 Muslim men, mostly from Saudi Arabia, were led in the successful attacks of 9/11/01 by Osama bin Laden from a cave in Afghanistan. At this time (5-20-13) over 100 of them have gone past 100 days in a hunger strike as an attempt to call their plight to the attention of people of conscience all over the world. On Sunday, May 19 a small group gathered to call for the release of all the cleared detainees and once again Dr. Rita Maran was there to speak out. Posted on May 16, 2013.

100 Days of Guantanamo Hunger Strike: Special Coverage- RT TV (15:45)

May 16, 2013 marks a dark milestone in one of the world’s most horrific prisons – The 100th day of a mass hunger strike at Guantanamo Bay. Out of 166 inmates at this time 130 are on hunger strike, according to prisoners, while the military only admits to 102. At least a third of them are being force fed through tubes, a procedure recognized by various medical organizations as painful enough to constitute another form of torture. And by all accounts – there’s no end in sight to the strike. RT discusses the stand-off with former Guantanamo detainee Moazzam Begg in Birmingham UK, who is now the Director of the “Cage Prisoners Activist Group”, Attorney Pardiss Kebriaei of the Center for Constitutional Rights who serves as the legal representative of 8 current Guantanamo “detainees”, military attorney Lt. Col. Barry Wingard, Judge Advocate General of the US Air Force, speaks out quite forcefully on behalf of his client. Wingard thanks RT for their consistent coverage of the prisoners’ plight. He sharply denounces American media “who are more than willing to forget about the whole situation”. He denounces CNN saying, “They’re doing a real fine job this week not interviewing a single prisoner, and regurgitating exactly what the camp officials want you to hear… There’s a two-part strategy, one is the public relations strategy and the behind the scenes crackdown that they are trying to hide…The President has the authority to sign a waver to get these men out of here. He can sign a waver… Indefinite detention is both illegal and immoral.”

A substantial number of people in Gitmo were basically sold to the CIA/ US in return for the reward offered for ‘terrorists’: basically, someone from a hostile family in Afghanistan would kidnap a shepherd and hand him in as a suspect. SAVE THE BERKELEY POST OFFICE!

Berkeley-Main-Downtown-US-Post-Office-MilveaSt-Flowers

SAVE OUR US CONSTITUTIONALLY MANDATED US POSTAL SERVICE! This is one more symptom of the Corporate Empire System’s drive to privatize everything on Earth! Now the target is your local Post Office! The “Save the Berkeley Post Office Committee” and the City of Berkeley will appeal the USPS decision to sell the beautiful and historic main Berkeley Post Office, and they encourage everyone to write and join their actions. From Georgetown to Santa Monica, the USPS is shamelessly selling historic post offices that were entrusted to it as our great and familiar public cultural and architectural heritage. “Save the Berkeley Post Office” is working with the “National Post Office Collaborate” to take joint legal action with other communities to stop these sales. The US Post Office is absurdly being required to pay its pension fund 75 years in advance. This deliberate destabilization policy must be stopped! Without this requirement, the post office is actually making a profit. C.B. Richard Ellis (CBRE) chaired by Richard Blum has an exclusive contract to sell USPS properties. Billionaire Blum is a University of California regent and is married to Democratic Party establishment Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Update 9-20-13 Major Cover Story Coverage of US Post Office Sales Scandal in the East Bay Express feature article from the new e-book by Peter Byrne.  Anne Feeney Cheers Berkeley Activists with Movement Songs!

National award-winning investigative journalist Peter Byrne reports that the husband of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California has been selling post offices at bargain basement prices – often to his own business partners. Richard C. Blum is the chairman of CBRE Group Inc., the largest commercial real estate firm in the world. In 2011, the Postal Service awarded Blum’s company an exclusive contract to sell off postal real estate in cities and towns across America. Byrne’s in-depth investigation details the many apparent conflicts of interests driving the CBRE deals. It brings to light a scathing government audit of Blum’s contract that is being ignored by the Obama administration. The investigation reveals how Senator Feinstein pressured the Postmaster General to stop a postal construction project, and to favor the interests of a developer working with her husband’s firm. Byrne explains why the Post Office is not really broke and how powerful forces on Capitol Hill are angling to franchise the U.S. Mail monopoly. The amazing peoples’ singer Anne Feeney came rolling through Berkeley a few weeks ago. On August 31, 2013 Anne was ready to hit the road to LA, but she came out to help the coalition fighting to keep the local post office from the New Deal era. See Save the Berkeley Post Office Facebook page. The city administration was remarkably supportive of this struggle. That’s Dave Welsh at right in the photo. He sang topical and inspirational labor songs and played keyboards with Anne. This attack on the very security and comfort of local geography and landmarks of our culture like the gracious Berkeley Post Office are simply part of a rigged corporate system gone global in its effort of Privatize All the Commonwealth Inheritance of All the People of the Earth. An occupation of the Berkeley Post Office area went on for months, including tents, music jam sing-outs, and outdoor movies with lots of healthy food from Food Not Bombs! Numerous rallies like the one that Anne attended on Aug 31, 2013. Here’s Anne Feeney’s Facebook Page!

See the new flash mob live video production coordinated by Hali Hammer! “Mr Postman Our Post Office Is Not For Sale!!!!”  Across the country, over 3700 post offices are at the risk of closure, including many historic buildings with New Deal public art. George W. Bush signed legislation in 2006 that destroyed the financial stability of the Postal Service and laid the groundwork for its privatization. Freddie Gorman (April 11, 1939 — June 13, 2006), who wrote the original lyric to “Please Mr. Postman”, was a retired letter carrier in Detroit MI both before and after the hit song. Hey, I’m in there top right around 1:57 into the song in my straw show hat! (Vic Sadot). What a great parody with purpose by Hali Hammer!

Breaking News at “Save The Berkeley Post Office” website! USPS WILL ABIDE BY THEIR OWN RULES: “In a surprise development Monday, the Postal Service tacked up an announcement at the Berkeley Main Post Office that appeals on the sale & relocation must be postmarked by May 22, 2013. When the USPS approved the sale & relocation of our historic post office, they set an appeal deadline of May 7th. We cried foul and noted that fifteen days was not consistent with USPS regulations, was not the practice on the east coast and was a policy applied only in California. When we asked the Postal Regulatory Commission they said the USPS has the discretion to use either fifteen or thirty days. Then Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s office asked the question. And now Berkeley has the thirty days it is entitled to by USPS regulations.”

Anyone may appeal this decision in writing. An appeal must be postmarked by May 22, 2013, and mailed to:

David Slivka was the sculptor of the 1937 limestone bas-relief on the east end of the entrance porch to the Berkeley Main Post Office. The center figure in back is holding a package addressed: “From: D.S. To: All Mankind, Truth Abode on Freedom Road.” Slivka used his mentor, Ralph Stackpole, as the model for the foreground center figure who is stooping to pick up a mail sack.
