The Berkeley “Ban the Bomb!” Video is out! The 2nd Edition of the Berkeley Peace Symbol commemoration has lots of cool special effects! Slightly re-titled, you can find it listed as “Berkeley Celebrates the 59th Birthday of the Peace Symbol” at the YouTube channel called “SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE HEART OF BERKELEY”.
The Sound and Recording Audio work in Fellowship Hall was by David Yandle. Post Production Audio & Video work was contributed by Vic Sadot. Now it’s posted to the internet! We need YOU to help us get this information and these links distributed! Note: Every photo on this page is linked to another related site full of information or music.
This video is 58 minutes in length and it will be set for Creative Commons free download so that it can be used in a non-profit manner by activists to schedule it on their local Public Access Cable TV stations. It is indeed educational in that it deals with a subject avoided by the corporate media, the hugely profitable and extremely dangerous nuclear arms race. Refer questions to Vic Sadot at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Born out of fear of nuclear mass destruction, the Peace Symbol has become an essential part of our Peace Movement. How was it created? Who did it? What was the moment of historical context in which this now well-known symbol was created?
It was Gerald Herbert Holten who created the Peace Symbol using navy semaphore flag signals as the basis for the design. The Peace Symbol was first used on February 21, 1958 in support of the “Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament“ in a march of 10,000 people from London to Aldermaston. Gerald Holten had been a conscientious objector during World War II. He was a graduate of the Royal College of Art.
Poet Arnie Passman and the Social Justice Committee of the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists invited poets, singer-songwriters, and comedians to celebrate the 59th Birthday of the Peace Symbol! The history of the birth of the “Band the Bomb” movement in the UK and the need for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to be pressed forward are discussed.
The Berkeley Celebration of the 59th Birthday of the Peace Symbol was on “Presidents’ Day”, Monday, Feb 20, 2017. Veteran BFUU Social Justice Committee activist Cynthia Jean Johnson welcomed the small audience who came to Fellowship Hall on that rainy day.
The obligations of signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the need for all nuclear countries to sign and participate, are explained in this video.
The gathering was fortunate to have a formidable poet like Frances L. Hillyard. Frances contributed several thought and emotion provoking poems, including poems about The Statue of Liberty; the view of a woman suffering the violence and turmoil in the city of Jenin in Palestine; a revolutionary salute to Mumia Abu Jamal; and the charming and hopeful “Dove of Light”. A separate 10 minute video of her performance has been posted!
A wonderful, inspirational, community sing-along was led by Berkeley’s beloved “Save the Post Office” organizer, Hali Hammer. The event closed with Christine Driftwood‘s implanting of a vision of possible uses of the Peace Symbol in Berkeley!
Hali Hammer kicked off her presentation by promoting a new website for the Progressive Majority Creative Network at WordPress. It’s a networking site for artists who are ready and willing to sing and speak truth to power! Click on Hali’s photo to link to her home site! Her songs are listed below in the list of “Performers & Participants”.
Chizu Hamada is a long-time San Francisco Bay Area activist against nuclear weapons and power. She works with Steve Zeltzer of KPFA’s WorkWeek Radio and the Labor Video Project, and thousands of other concerned citizens of many countries in various organizations, but principally she works with No Nukes Action Committee. The group has protest rallies outside the Japanese Consulate in San Francisco at 3 pm on the 11th of every month since the nuclear catastrophe first happened on March 11, 2011. Since March 11, 2017 will be the 6th anniversary of the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history there should be a larger than usual turn-out. What’s more is that the emergency is an ongoing radioactive disaster that continues to contaminate land, air, and sea, and continues to threaten all living creatures that depend on these elements of nature for sustenance.

There’s a great poem about Palestine in this new video! It’s part of a 4 poem presentation by Frances Hillyard that is 10 minutes long: Frances Hillyard Poetry at Berkeley 59th Birthday of the Peace Symbol (10:00) SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE HEART OF BERKELEY.
Note: Several photos in the video of the poem by Frances L. Hillyard about the town of Jenin in Palestine were used by permission of Ahmed Alomary who lives in Jenin, Palestine. During research Vic Sadot discovered Ahmed’s YouTube video, which lists a link to the Facebook Photography Page of Ahmed Alomary. Ahmed responded affirmatively to a request for permission to take some screenshots from his video, saying that he would be pleased that people would be made more aware of what is really happening in Palestine. Here is the link to his vignette of images of the beautiful aspects of the city under pressure from the Apartheid supremacist regime following a plan for long-term expansion that involves the dispossession and subjugation of the Palestinians. Ahmed Alomary manages to capture the beauty in the city and countryside around Jenin. But the Zionist expansion is constantly pressing into their territories with colonizers who are euphemistically called “settlers”. And the IDF is always nearby to enforce “The Law In These Parts” (An Israeli film that was screened at the annual Jewish Film Festival in Berkeley, California).

Henry Knorr at the open mic during the Q&A session on Feb 16, 2017 in Berkeley
Henry Knorr Defends Alison Weir from JVP Attacks on Voices in the Middle East on KPFA Pacifica Radio. Move the bar forward to the 38:00 minute mark to hear Henry Knorr, who is an American Jewish Bay Area activist against the 6 decade Apartheid Occupation of Palestine. He is also a member of JVP. He calls it a “demonization campaign” against Alison Weir and IfAmericanKnew dot org. He also admires Alison for “not just talking to the choir”. He is disgusted with the secret dossier compiled on her, and how an umbrella group named The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation of Palestine was led to expel her due to the slander campaign. The real problem is that she stands against Zionism as a supremacist political ideology. He talks about her book Against Our Better Judgment about the Israel Lobby and how it is based to a large degree on academic histories by Jewish historians, thoroughly documented, “not kooky stuff” he asserts from years of study and activism on his own part.

This song is from “Truth Troubadour”, which was released on Dec 2, 2016 as the 4th CD listing in partnership with CD Baby. The song is based on the book of the same title by King family lawyer, William Pepper. The book tells the story of the trial that Pepper won on behalf of the King family in 1999 in a Memphis court where a jury of 6 black and 6 white jurors unanimously found Loyd Jowers and unnamed government conspirators guilty of murdering Martin Luther King. The studio recording features Vic Sadot on vocals and acoustic guitar and Eric Golub on viola.

Amazon has this about the new book:
Bestselling author, James Earl Ray’s defense attorney, and, later, lawyer for the King family William Pepper reveals who actually killed MLK.
William Pepper was James Earl Ray’s lawyer in the trial for the murder of Martin Luther King Jr., and even after Ray’s conviction and death, Pepper continues to adamantly argue Ray’s innocence. This myth-shattering exposé is a revised, updated, and heavily expanded volume of Pepper’s original bestselling and critically acclaimed book Orders to Kill, with twenty-six years of additional research included. The result reveals dramatic new details of the night of the murder, the trial, and why Ray was chosen to take the fall for an evil conspiracy—a government-sanctioned assassination of our nation’s greatest leader. The plan, according to Pepper, was for a team of United States Army Special Forces snipers to kill King, but just as they were taking aim, a backup civilian assassin pulled the trigger.
In The Plot to Kill King, Pepper shares the evidence and testimonies that prove that Ray was a fall guy chosen by those who viewed King as a dangerous revolutionary. His findings make the book one of the most important of our time—the uncensored story of the murder of an American hero that contains disturbing revelations about the obscure inner-workings of our government and how it continues, even today, to obscure the truth.
“Truth Troubadour” is the title of Vic Sadot’s latest CD with 18 songs. Truth Troubadour is the most acoustic and reflective CD of the 4 CD’s that he has posted since first teaming with DiscMakers and CD Baby in 1997. Seventeen of the 18 songs on Truth Troubadour are duos with Vic on guitar and vocals, and some piano accordion on several songs. Eric Golub contributes his formidable talents on various stringed instruments: viola, violin, and 2 ukuleles. It’s a mix of broadside ballads and sweet love songs. Truth Troubadour was published to CD Baby on Dec 2, 2016.
The first press announcement was at VicSadot.com calling for reviews!
Left My Mind is the lead-off song and the only rocker on the CD. Like Lori, a gentle poetic love song, Left My Mind was written by Joe Sadot, who passed in 1978 at age 26. Left My Mind was recorded in Delaware with Rob Sadot, Dean Banks, and Rob Hunter at Rob’s Tune Room Studios. Everything else was recorded at Ancient Owl Audio (formerly Robot Envy Studio) with Sammy Fielding doing all of the sound recording and mixing work in Berkeley, CA. Here we have Rob Sadot recording “Full Spectrum Dominance” in Berkeley.
The 18 songs cover many topics and emotions. The reflective love songs are titled In the Harbor of Love, Lori, and Dearest Lady. The original broadside ballad topical songs are well-researched on timely topics, such as Full Spectrum Dominance, An Act of State: The Execution of Martin Luther King, Selling Futures, Courage To Resist – Free Chelsea Manning, The Kidnapping Coup (Haiti 2004), and No Nuke Blues Fukushima Update.
Full Spectrum Dominance is of those songs that may take on greater significance and meaning as time goes by. The term is used by the US military and political sectors in reference to their goal of global hegemony on land, air, sea, outerspace, and cyberspace.
The line that says, “Beware of those who joke about sending in the drones!” is a reference to President Obama’s joke at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, May 1, 2010. It was as callous and crude as President Bush’s joke skit at the same dinner during his administration when he was joking about looking for “weapons of mass destruction” in the country he massively destroyed for being under suspicion of having them, Iraq.
Psychopaths in powerful positions seem to not have the empathic abilities that normal people have in society. Michael Moore reported on it here: Obama Jokes About Killing Jonas Brothers With Predator Drones (00:29) mmflint channel: “The Jonas Brothers are here. (Applause.) They’re out there somewhere. Sasha and Malia are huge fans. But, boys, don’t get any ideas. (Laughter.) I have two words for you, predator drones. (Laughter) You will never see it coming. (Laughter.) You think I’m joking. (Laughter.)”
This song was written by Vic Sadot for the 4-10-11 visit of Bruce Gagnon to speak at Fellowship Hall in Berkeley, CA. Bruce is the founder of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. The line-up for this October 2012 session was Vic Sadot on vocals and acoustic guitar, Rob Sadot on electric guitar, and Eric Golub is on violin. “Full Spectrum Dominance makes us all the “enemy”!

“We’ve got socialism for the rich; competition for the rest…
What kind of social system leaves so many dispossessed? …
If we should ever take it in our hearts to share this great Land of the Free,
It would be like Woody Guthrie said: This land was made for you and me!”
See Woody Guthrie Center to learn more about his legacy in American folk music.
The Kidnapping Coup is a broadside ballad that tells the story of the US military intervention in Haiti in 2004 to overthrow the elected government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the Lavalas Party. He and his wife were actually blindfolded and taken to Africa on a US military jet!

Vic chose some great songs to cover too: Changes and United Fruit (Company) by Phil Ochs, Working Class Hero by John Lennon, Masters of War by Bob Dylan, and Fayette County Snow by Greg DeCowsky. Click on the titles or on the photos below to hear these cover songs on the CD.
The Fog Watch takes you back into time before we had paved roads and it took farmers an over-night trek to deliver their harvest to the nearest local marketplace. That song was adapted from a poem by Vic’s Uncle George Reuter.

“Imagine A Day Without Censorship” Speakout At Facebook Zuckerberg’s SF Mansion (41:16) Labor Video YouTube Channel
Labor Video Labor Video John Lennon Birthday SpeakoutPublished Note on Oct 11, 2016: On John Lennon’s birthday October 9, 2016, a rally sponsored by LaborNet.org was held outside the San Francisco mansion of billionaire Mark Zuckerberg the owner of Facebook to protest the censorship and privatization of the internet. Participants discussed Zuckerberg’s agreement with the apartheid Israeli government and Netanyahu to censor the internet with critical content of the Israeli government. Facebook is also censoring live streaming from Standing Rock Native American pipeline protesters and Kurdish activists. * See the list of links documenting the citations of censorship or spying provided in the description box for this video.
First published video was the ILM Live Stream Facebook Censorship (49:49) brightpathvideo YouTube Channel of the JOHN LENNON BIRTHDAY SPEAKOUT AGAINST FACEBOOK CENSORSHIP
International Labor Media Published Note on Oct 9, 2016: “In front of Mark Zuckerberg’s San Francisco mansion, protesting Facebook censorship of Palestinian reporters and more. Oct. 9, 2016.”
Amidst the general call for the creation of a Commons Free Speech Public Space on the Internet, there were those who stepped forth to voice more specific charges of censorship at the John Lennon’s Birthday Speak Out Against Facebook Censorship on Sunday, Oct 9, 2016 outside a Zuckerberg mansion in San Francisco, CA. ILM is the “International Labor Media” channel.
Steve Zeltzer at one of the Zuckerberg Bay Area mansions at the John Lennon’s Birthday Speakout Against Facebook Censorship on Oct 9, 2016 in San Francisco, California.
Steve Zeltzer of Labor Video says (4:28 – 4:58) that Zuckerberg’s “power over over a billion people who are now on Facebook is being used to control political debate and dissent. We believe that this is wrong. In fact, he met with Prime Minister Netanyahu and signed an agreement saying that he would work with the Israeli government to censor critical comments against the Apartheid regime of Israel, of the Zionist regime. If Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg want to be political appendages of the Israeli government, that obviously their choice. But they will have to pay politically for that, and everyone needs to know what they are doing.”
“The other thing is the issue of spying because people who use Facebook put their personal names, their personal information on Facebook and he has access to it, which means the US government has access to it. So people have to be aware of that.” Zeltzer describes the global reach of Zuckerberg using Brazil as an example. He purchased the domain name “internet.com”. Tech barons want the internet to be privately owned explains Steve Zeltzer. “We need municipal WiFi free public internet.
Zeltzer refers to John Lennon’s Birthday in saying, “Imagine a day without censorship! Imagine a world without censorship!” (10:05 – 10:45) “What the supporters of Zionism and the Apartheid regime in Israel want to do is they want to pass laws in the United States saying that you cannot boycott Israel because that’s ‘anti-Semitism’… Now this is a canard that is used against people to basically accuse people who are critical of the policies of Israel of being anti-Semitic. And this is a very reactionary dangerous kind of position. So, in New York Gov. Cuomo passed such a resolution. In California Gov. Brown signed such a resolution. We’re saying this is outrageous! People have the right to boycott.”
A woman speaks (12:50 – 13:08), “If we were to look at the history of Boycotting, Sanctions, Divestment movement within the U.S., it was successfully used to bring down the Apartheid South African regime. So at that time was that equated with being anti-White or Anti-Dutch?” She also cites Facebook for not allowing a livestream of the arrests at the Native American resistance at Standing Rock to protect their water rights against the proposed Dakota Access Oil Pipeline across their land. This woman speaker also cites the experience of having Green Party Jill Stein posts banned from being posted on Facebook. (This happened to me while trying to post to Facebook groups in which I am a member! VRS) The Woman’s Free Gaza Flotilla to end the blockade of Gaza was intercepted illegally in international waters, but that has been blocked out of the American corporate-government press, not just on Facebook.
The next speaker, the man with the “From Vietnam to Palestine Facebook/Zuckerberg Censoring History” sign, (21:18 -32:22) was concerned with how private property ownership of public forums like Facebook is part of the general elimination of the public common space for public expression. He focused on the recent role of Facebook in Turkey during an attempted coup where suppression of freedom of speech was openly done in the name of restoring order with emergency decrees. Journalists were beaten by police and dragged by the hair to jail when TV stations were shut down without any news coverage by the compliant complicit western media. Facebook “respects” the Turkish Anti-Terrorism Law, “which in Turkey it means that if you show the army killing civilians, that’s a terrorist act… Facebook goes along with this and shuts down the pages. As we have seen, in the last 10 days when Palestinian journalists try to show their opinion immediately Facebook has stepped in and shut it down.”
Steve Zeltzer comes back into the soundtrack around 39:33 to sum up the censorship situation. Zuckerberg’s support for attacks on public education and on teachers’ unions reveals his ruling class politics. The people want genuine democracy, not the private ownership and public censorship and spying that we are getting on Facebook!
