SF Mime Troupe Video by Vic Sadot

The San Francisco Mime Troupe kicked off its Summer 2016 Season to a large crowd in Berkeley’s Cedar-Rose Park on July 2 and 3. Then they packed everything up and did a show in Dolores Park in San Francisco on July 4. “Schooled” (6:34) is the title of the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s Summer 2016 musical play.

Vic Sadot created a short  video (6:33) made from photos and short clips at the end of the show on July 3 at Cedar Rose Park. It has been posted at Vic Sadot YouTube and Truth Troubadour YouTube. The lyrics are full of one line gems that pack a lot of impact in the whole context of the storyline. Ira Marlowe runs a little Berkeley club called The Monkey House, and he is one of the most prolific songwriters in the SF Bay Area. Daniel Savio is the Musical Director for the SFMT Summer Tour. Try to remember to get the free flyer “Schooled Lyrics”, which is separate from the program. Get both! You won’t regret it!

It was another great combination of script writing, comedic talent, and clever song crafting. They pass out a program with all the credits and also a Song Lryics flyer for this year’s play called “Schooled” written by Michael Gene Sullivan and Eugenie Chan. Directed by Michael Sullivan. Music & Lyrics by Ira Marlowe. Musical Direction by Daniel Savio. In “The Campaign”candidate Babbit is a Trump-like boastful character derides his oppostion saying he is: “Up against some mommy whose kid can’t make the grade… and some aging commie on the corner. Vote for Babbit! Vote for Babbit! Here’s your chance, now grab it!” Candidate Ethel retorts: This country needs citizens, awake and aware! Standing up to power and that class of billionaires! Our schools need teachers, respected and inspired! Our kids need to be taught, and not just wired!”

Will Durkee plays guitar and bass in the 3 piece SFMT Band. The actors and Troupe members go into the crowd after each play to solicit support. Their political message is able to get to the root of our social problems because they do not accept funding from corporations. The SFMT BAND is Will Durkee on guitar and bass; Dominic Moisant on percussion; and Daniel Savio on keyboards.

The key to the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s independence and artistic integrity is their San Francisco Bay Area fan-based funding. They do strategic grant fundraising that also supports the many projects they engage in. At the SFMT Merchandise Booth at every show many attractive souvenir items are available. I went for the T-Shirt this year. There is also a volunteer sign-up sheet at the merchandise booth, and you can subscribe to this unique SF Bay Area cultural project at their website. After the show, you can have a chat with the cast and crew. But on days when they have to bust everything down and haul it to the next show, they may seem weary and in a hurry. Able bodied volunteers are appreciated in most cases (lol)…

The San Francisco Mime Troupe is indeed a precious example of community theatrical resistance to war and social injustice as well as being a participatory education vehicle for citizen empowerment. Come laugh and enjoy the sunshine as you contemplate the great difference between being “educated” to be capable of doing the critical thinking needed of citizens in a democracy; and being warehoused and “schooled” to be a pawn in the plans of the super rich psycho-patholigical predatory class out to privatize every commonwealth resource and institution on the planet. SF Mime Trouple may be a rag tag organization, but their mission is to make all the difference in the world. So…

“What are you’s gonna do about it?!!!” (Fredersen J. Babbit – Corporate School Board Candidate in “Schooled” by Michael Gene Sullivan and Eugenie Chan)

Code Pink Activist Cynthia Papermaster Works To Close Diablo Nuke on California Coast

Cynthia Papermaster kicked off the public commentary at the Oct. 2, 2014 Public Service Commission hearing chaired by Commission President Michael Peevey. She walked right up to Peevey with her faithful service dog Jimminywinks and she pinkslipped him. That is, she told him he was fired. And then she told the public that “we should get him fired”. Ironically, Mr. Peevey resigned a week later!

Code Pink Golden Gate Chapter’s Cynthia Papermaster was the key organizer for an event in Berkeley’s Historic Fellowship Hall on Oct 26, 2014 titled “Beat the Devil! Close Diablo Right Now!”. It was co-sponsored by the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists Social Justice Committee. Holly Harwood was wearing two hats as current Chair of the BFUU Social Justice Committee and Code Pink Golden Gate Chapter Coordinator. The event was made quite special and unique by the presence of Harvey Wasserman and Joanna Macy. Cynthia Papermaster was the MC and she kept things moving along at a good pace. There was some wonderful art donated for the “Beat the Devil! Close Diablo Right Now!” campaign by artist Mark Bryan titled “Devil’s Due, Meltdown at Diablo Canyon”. Californians have become increasingly alarmed by the longterm radioactive fallout from the disaster in Fukushima, Japan. And the comparisons with the Diablo Canyon Nuke Plant built along the coast is all too similar to the design in Japan. Bay Area Fukushima Response activists were there, including Phoebe Sorgen who sang a sweet song to piano accompaniment to get the evening started.

You pay your bill, but PG&E does not get the money until it shuts down Diablo Canyon, a plant similar in location and style to the ones involved in the disaster in Fukushima, Japan; a plant for which its own NRC inspector recommended to be shut down! We the people must intervene in the matter. Read how to do it!

A devastating and tragic oil train derailment, explosions, and intense raging fires came crashing into the little town of Lac-Mégantic, Québec, Canada on the night of July 6, 2013. In the aftermath, citizens from the town began to find their collective voice and to organize themselves. One of them spoke in Richmond to a large crowd at the Barry Bowers Center in Richmond, CA on March 1, 2014.

Marilaine Savard told the story and showed photos from her home town tragedy. An unattended 74-car freight train transporting the most volatile of crude oil was parked at night on a steep incline a few miles from town. Somehow the train’s brakes failed and it ran away and picked up speed until it derailed as it took a curve in the center of the quaint little town located in the Eastern Townships of the Canadian province of Quebec. It’s very close to the border of Maine and next to a beautiful lake also named Lac-Mégantic. The train derailed, resulting in such intense fires and explosions of multiple tank cars that it killed 47 people who were “vaporized”. More than 30 buildings in the town’s center were destroyed turning the quaint Québec town into an inferno and into a wasteland. See the photo from before above and the photo after below.

Such was the story told by a young mother named Marilaine Savard from Lac-Mégantic, who fate cast as the spokesperson for the people of the town’s effort to respond to Big Oil and it’s conduct of criminal neglect and irresponsibility. Marilaine Savard was emotionally distraught at times. Yet she was stalwart and inspired by the outpouring of good will and “Solidarity” that she received from her new-found friends in the Chevron Oil Refinery town of Richmond, California. If any California town can feel for Lac-Mégantic it would be Richmond, which has suffered the effects of the huge oil refinery in its midst.

Marilaine Savard, spokesperson for the Citizens Committee of Lac-Mégantic, Québec, was in the San Francisco Bay area for about a week of local speaking and organizing for alternatives to the fossil-fuel industry as well as to tell the story of her community. Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin gave a fiery speech and read a formal Solidarity Proclamation from the City of Oakland to the city of Lac-Mégantic.

Mayor McLaughlin is part of the Richmond Progressive Alliance which has transformed Richmond from an oil “company town” to a leading city standing up to Wall St bank foreclosures and Chevron corruption and pollution. Her second term as mayor is currently dealing with the aftermath of the damages for the August 6, 2013 Chevron refinery explosion and fire that resulted in 15,000 going to the hospital.

Publicity for the event stated that “Fossil Fuels are a disaster, from fracking and tar sands extraction to transport in rail cars, pipelines and tankers; to refining; to burning; to climate change-caused drought, heatwaves, fires, floods, and super-storms that are wrecking our communities and planet”. The panel addressed questions related to this theme: “How can we move from “Not In My Back Yard” (NIMBY) to “Not On Planet Earth” (NOPE)? How can we STOP fossil fuel disasters and START fossil-fuel free solutions?”

Homeland Security Surveillance Comes Corporate Outsourced to Oakland

Update regarding who has the contract to enact the Domain Awareness Center (DAC) Surveillance project and how to get more up-to-date information from citizens who are watching these proceedings and oppose violations of the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution. Full additions for this update are placed at the bottom of the content of the first published article, except for this notice: According to a reliable friend, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), had to be removed from the Domain Awareness Center surveillance project because it turned out that they did not meet the requirements of Measure T. On December 6, 1988, the city council enacted Ordinance No. 11062 C.M.S., the Nuclear Free Zone Act. This act prohibits the city from doing business with any contractors, companies and consulting firms who knowingly engage in nuclear weapons work. My source cites this link: http://oaklandwiki.org/Schneider_Electric

One of the many disturbing things about the Edward Snowden revelations of the all-sweeping depth and breadth of post 9/11 spying on Americans that caused him to blow the whistle and flee the country was the fact that the massive NSA spying was outsourced to a corporation called Booz Allen Associates. Booz Allen has long been suspected of being a CIA front or having ties that bind it to that and other secretive agencies.

Feinstein-Senate-Intelligence-Committee

Another disturbing thing about the Snowden revelations was that US Senator Diane Feinstein D-CA had made a secret deal to keep that level of violation of the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution a secret from the public until 2038! Click the Feinstein photo to read about that!

Residents of Oakland oppose mammoth new spy center and Homeland Security money for outsourced corporation SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation)

Now we hear of something called the “Domain Awareness Center” coming to Oakland. Another corporation calling itself SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation) has come to Oakland awash in Homeland Security money to set up a huge Surveillance Center. This may be a corporation that you have never heard about, and it seems like they would prefer to keep everything about themselves secret while trying to probe everything about every citizen and non-citizen on the planet. For more on SAIC, read chapter 15 “Duane Andrews & SAIC” in Kevin Ryan’s new book, “Another Nineteen: Investigating Legitimate 9/11 Suspects”. They benefited enormously after 9/11 and yet they were in a unique position to stop those very terrorist attacks, according to author Kevin Ryan who says that they should be investigated as “suspects”. I will post a review of his book very soon, as I am now on the last chapter. It is a fascinating, well-documented, and disturbing book! http://www.another19.com/index.html

Light Brigades are springing up around the country to do night time protests. In Oakland they gathered at City Hall to oppose the new Domain Awareness Center proposed by the post 9/11 created US federal agency called Homeland Security

An Oakland Wiki Site was created to discuss issues and interesting things about Oakland. One major topic under discussion is the proposed “Domain Awareness Center” being created by Mayor Quan, who says she “cannot say no” to Homeland Security. What does that mean? Local research into the Surveillance Programs that the Feds are pushing on cities like Oakland reveals a vast sum of money being spent on this control system for spying on citizens at a time when social programs are being cut and demonstrations are picking up in regularity. This is all part and parcel of moving the police state forward under cover of a Black, supposedly “liberal” “progressive” puppet face President. “The Domain Awareness Center (DAC) is a surveillance hub, currently being built, which aims to integrate public and private cameras and sensors all over the City of Oakland into one $10.9M mass surveillance system. Needless to say, this issue is highly controversial, and not only here in Oakland: many US cities, and other cities worldwide, are watching closely to see how Oakland’s example will play out. On July 30th, 2013 Oakland’s City Council unanimously approved a $2M grant for Phase 2 of the DAC, which will be funded by grants from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and implemented by the military contractor Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).

For more on SAIC, read chapter 15 “Duane Andrews & SAIC” in Kevin Ryan‘s new book, “Another Nineteen: Investigating Legitimate 9/11 Suspects”. Numerous videos of the DAC Homeland Security program being discussed at Oakland City Council meetings are posted at this site. After that you will need a little radical humor and maybe a song to inspire you to fight back! Fortunately, Berkeley has just what the doctor ordered. We have Twit Wit Radio and I have a song called “Full Spectrum Dominance”.

Twit Wit Radio 2-23-14 KPFA Berkeley, CA – Weekly comedy laughing at the dark side… Seriously clever playfulness, and Berkeley Kid always shines… Part quiz show, part Berkeley free speech protest, part exposé of “deep politics” from the “military coup of 1963” to Democratic party Mayor Quan of Oakland’s cooperation with Federal agencies to create police state, particularly the surveillance of the city in the “domain awareness program”…Excellent musicians rendering popular tunes into thought provoking parodies… “After Disaster” and “Oakland’s on the Rise” are two of my favorites! Always a show that you can listen to more than once to catch what may have gone by too fast the first time. Enjoy!

Full Spectrum Dominance” is a free song at SoundCloud! Please use it now in defense of the 4th Amendment! You are not likely to hear this on your local radio station, even if it calls itself “progressive” or “alternative”. It’s up to you to get this song heard! The term “full spectrum dominance” by the United States was used in papers written by the Project for the New American Century, the neo-con think tank that so many G. W. Bush war profiteer appointees came from. By this terminology they clearly mean to control everything on land, air, sea, media, space, and cyberspace! Hence, surveillance and information analysis and application is a big part of that plan, a plan that the Democratic Party Obama regime has been exposed by Edward Snowden on the implementation of the TIP (“Total Information Project”) style privacy intrusions and 4th Amendment violations.

Defend the 4th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States:

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

Full Update 2-25-14 Learning more about the proposed Oakland Domain Awareness Center Surveillance Center: According to a reliable friend, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), had to be removed from the Domain Awareness Center surveillance project because it turned out that they did not meet the requirements of Measure T passed in 1988 to ban city contracts with all who engage in nuclear war industry.

http://oaklandwiki.org/Schneider_Electric

History of Measure T: http://oaklandwiki.org/Measure_T

In 1988, voters adopted Measure T which declared Oakland a Nuclear Free Zone. The measure passed with 57% of the vote.2 On December 6, 1988, the city council enacted Ordinance No. 11062 C.M.S., the Nuclear Free Zone Act. This act prohibits the city from doing business with any contractors, companies and consulting firms who knowingly engage in nuclear weapons work.

Firms must fill out a Nuclear Free Disclosure form (Form-S). If they don’t fill it out, they’re considered a nuclear weapon maker and restricted from having a contract with Oakland. (see the Disclosure Form for more details.)

Measure T also “requires 45 days notice of any transport of nuclear weapons or hazardous nuclear materials on city streets or waterways as well as a public hearing to determine the safest routes.” Further, the city has to divest from any companies which manufacture nuclear weapons. No nuclear materials can be used within the city limits.1

The federal government sued Oakland over Measure T. (See: United States v. City of Oakland, 958 F.2d 300 (9th Cir. 1992)). The suit invalidated Measure T on the grounds that the Federal Government has constitutional authority over national defense and atomic energy, and Oakland is a major port and has freeways and train lines running through it. In 1992, the Oakland City Council reaffirmed Measure T “to the extend legally possible” in Ordinance 11478. ordinance 11478.pdf

In 2013, the contractor chosen to implement Phase II of the controversial Domain Awareness Center was found to be in violation of Measure T.

The Oakland Privacy Working Group is a grassroots community organization that works on privacy and anti-surveillance efforts here in Oakland. The group grew out of an Occupy Oakland privacy working group, but is now basically its own thing. It ramped up activities after the Domain Awareness Center (DAC) first came to public attention in summer 2013 and is now working primarily on stopping the center from being implemented.

All the Potential Contractors for Oakland’s Controversial Surveillance Center Have Ties to Nuclear Weapons – East Bay Express by Darwin Bond Graham 11-19-13

“After hearing concerns from privacy advocates, the City Council late last year cut ties with the firm it picked to build the center, Science Applications International Corp. (since renamed Leidos Holdings). Opponents had noted that contracting with the firm violated a city prohibition on doing business with companies that are connected to nuclear weapons makers. They also noted that the firm had paid a $500 million penalty in connection with a scandal-plagued project in New York City. In the city report recommending Schneider Electric Inc., a multinational industrial equipment firm, staffers detailed the firm’s recent litigation history and confirmed that it was not involved in nuclear weapons. Schneider got the recommendation over Motorola Solutions, Inc and G4S Technology LLC.”

Berkeley Art House: Rovics-Drooker Concert for Tristan Anderson

Berkeley Art House Hosted a David Rovics – Eric Drooker Concert for Tristan Anderson

Click here to see Justice for Tristan on Facebook for Updates. There is a rally scheduled for Thursday, March 13 at Oscar Grant Plaza in Oakland from 4-7 pm: 4 pm Free Feast!; 5 pm Speakers; 6 pm 5th Anniversary March in Solidarity with Tristan Anderson & Palestine! Oscar Grant Plaza is a a 160,000-square-foot (15,000 m2) public space formerly known as Frank H. Ogawa Plaza and it was the home of Occupy Oakland. It is located where San Pablo Avenue converges with Broadway and 14th Street. Justice4Tristan@gmail.com

Berkeley’s Art House, formally known as “Art House Gallery & Cultural Center” is an institutional gem of an asset for Berkeley. It was founded by Harold Adler, who is well-known for his photography. Although the Art House Gallery seems to be situated in a very commercial area at 2905 Shattuck Ave, the city has lately required that the sound system be cut off at 8 pm. So the concerts of yesteryear with full bands amplified are no longer held in the evening. Singers just have to project as loud as they can in the room that seems capable of seating 30-50 people by my guess. Audiences there tend to be quiet and attentive during the performances anyway. Upcoming shows listed at the Art House Gallery website show Poetry Unbounded #10 set for Sunday March 2 from 5-8 pm with Joan Gelfand,  David Shadduck, and Todd TemkinRon Thompson is scheduled for a concert on Saturday, March 15 at 8 pm. David-Rovic_Tristan-Anderson_ArtHouse2-23-14

The event held yesterday, Sunday, Feb 23, was a benefit for activist Tristan Anderson that featured David Rovics and Eric Drooker, who also happen to be old friends from New York. Tristan delivered a short slide show about his Central American travels that predated his injury in Palestine by an Israeli soldier firing a tear gas grenade into his skull. It is easy to overlook that Tristan was a long-time rights activist before he became more widely known as a result of his injuries in Palestine. He is partially paralyzed now. He sat in a wheel-chair in his hoodie. Nonetheless, his recovery was described as “miraculous considering the extent of his injuries”, according to his stalwart friend Ayre. A law suit is proceeding, and it was mentioned that, so far, they have been unsuccessful in discovering which Israeli troop fired the shot at Tristan’s head. It happened after a demonstration was well finished and was therefore considered quite intentional, stated Ayre. There is an ongoing civil case against the State of Israel and they need funds to push that forward.

David Rovics with his daughter Leila and pet rabbit having a chat with Tristan Anderson after the concert at Art House 2-23-14

David Rovics gave a stellar performance of original topical songs. He is the closest artist to a Broadside Balladeer like Phil Ochs that I can think of today in that he is incredibly prolific on a broad swath of controversial subjects and not afraid to take them on. The songs he performed at Art House included a couple of songs shouted out to him by his little daughter Leila who is traveling with him on this California road trip. She wanted to hear the song about the famous Greek protest dog, “Riot Dog”. There’s an article in David’s “Songwriter’s Blog” titled “Travels With Leila” that shows the fatherly role that David enjoys.  In “Prism”, the name of a surveillance program of the NSA, he says, “I looked into a prism and what did I see? Eric Drooker and Harold Adler enjoy talking after the concert

Eric Drooker combined singing, banjo playing and occasionally harmonica, to accompaniment of a highly captivating slide show of scenes from his own art, which reminded me of the old wood prints. He is known for getting his art on the New Yorker magazine while also contributing art to various causes, such as Occupy Oakland and the cover of David Rovic’s latest CD. Find out more about the amazingly multi-talented Eric Drooker and see the prints that has to sell right here: http://www.drooker.com

Drooker played one set between two by David Rovics and after Tristan’s slide show. Food was provided by Food Not Bombs. See http://www.foodnotbombs.net

Paul Larudee of the International Solidarity Movement with Palestine speaking at Art House on 2-23-14 in Berkeley

Paul Larudee, a veteran of the Gaza Flotilla attempts to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza strip, and many other actions with the Palestinian Solidarity Movement, spoke briefly about the continuing human rights violations and terrible conditions in Palestine under occupation. You can read his blog here: http://www.palestinefreedom.org/speakers/paul-larudee

“Spies Are Reading My Blog” comes from his real life experience in trying to play a gig in New Zealand and being prevented from entering. Someone obviously does not like what he is singing about. “Everything Can Change” was a fitting last song. David may sing about some depressing troubles, but he is not singing for any reason other than to inspire people to participate in meaningful social change aimed at peace through justice. Harold Adler told me about his travels in Nicaragua in 2005 when I asked him about the photo display on the inside side wall of Art House. He found it very depressing, but inspiring to see how people struggle in the most adverse conditions.

There was also a conversation that I had with some Oakland activists that will motivate me to post a short blog next about something they called the Oakland wiki on  “Domain Awareness Center”. Very disturbing indeed! The post about the new Homeland Security funded corporate outsourced surveillance program coming to Oakland is now posted here in BERKELEY CALLING.

Berkeley Gathering Calls for Defense of Rights

BERKELEY CALLING! The living Free Speech tradition of Berkeley, CA, the home of one of the University of California’s most famous universities and communities, was shining like a beacon to the world once again. An eloquent and heart-felt call to Defend the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States was issued by a group of distinguished and experienced speakers.

On Thursday, January 23, 2014 over 400 Bay Area residents were treated to a panel of civil liberties leading activists at John’s Presbyterian Church in Berkeley California titled “NSA Surveillance and Our ‘Almost Orwellian’ State.” It was a packed house with a very lively panel discussion. It was also live-streamed.

Shahid Buttar, Executive Director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, was one of the main speakers at the forum. Shahid Battar was joined by Daniel Ellsberg, the iconic whistleblower of The Pentagon Papers fame, a national hero described by President Nixon as “the most dangerous man in America”; Norman Solomon, co-founder of RootsAction.org and producer of the film “War Made Easy”; Cindy Cohn, Legal Director and General Counsel to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Rainey Reitman, Activism Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and BORDC board member, kicked off the event with brief remarks. The moderator was Robert Jaffee, a volunteer attorney on the Hedges v. Obama case challenging “indefinite detention without due process”. Left to right seated are Daniel Ellsberg, Shahid Buttar, Cindy Cohen, and Norman Solomon. Photo by Vic Sadot

Shahid Buttar sounded the call to Defend the Bill of Rights! He denounced Senator Feinstein D-CA for her role not protecting the American people against the crimes against the Constitution and the attempt to keep the crimes secret until 2038. He asked people to sign and promote the “Shame on Feinstein” statement, which demands that and to tell Senator Feinstein D-CA to withdraw her bogus bill to codify continuing unwarranted, untargeted, and unsubstantiated surveillance of citizens and to resign from the Senate oversight committee on Intelligence for trying to cover up instead of stopping the vast illegal spying on Americans by the NSA. Solomon earlier exposed in an open letter that Feinstein had made a secret deal to keep that level of Total Information Awareness surveillance a secret until 2038. There is a Shame on Feinstein Facebook Page. And the petition is here: https://shameonfeinstein.org

For the more comprehensive report on the forum read Matthew Kellegrew inThe Peoples’s Blog For the Constitution” by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC). http://www.constitutioncampaign.org/blog/#.UuYabNLTlkg

Kellegrew reports, “The panel often focused on the positive, presenting examples of creative ways local communities can engage with the issue of over broad surveillance. Members of the Shame On Feinstein coalition passed out flyers and BORDC’s Shahid Buttar commended the effort from the stage. Buttar put the struggle for a truly accountable government in the context of broader historical struggles for liberty and freedom.”

Executive Director of BORDC, Shahid Buttar, issued the call for a vigorous grass roots citizen campaign to Defend the Bill of Rights. Seated left to right at the table: Daniel Ellsberg, Cindy Cohen, and Norman Solomon.

Cindy Cohn provided an update on the legal challenges to NSA spying. Norman Solomon shared his analysis of mass media coverage of the NSA controversy. Daniel Ellsberg addressed the role and history of whistleblowers and the institutions they confront. Shahid Bhuttar focused on grassroots action opportunities at the state level, including the “Shame on Feinstein” initiative calling for Senator Feinstein’s resignation as chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the bi-partisan “Off Now Coalition” policy proposed in Sacramento, CA, and in other states, such as Utah, cut off the NSA from state resources. Are You A Citizen Or Are You A Slave? (5:11) Vic Sadot video at Truth Troubadour YouTube Channel – “Are You A Citizen” is an anthem salute to struggle that is done in strident Cajun waltz style. The song was written by Vic Sadot and Cindy Hubschmidt. It challenges citizen apathy and cynicism. In reciting the successful parts of the historical record, the song confronts the notion that we cannot change anything. Yet the the historical record of struggle says otherwise. Colonialism, slavery, and debtor prisons were defeated. A Bill of Rights, the right to organize unions, civil rights, and womens voting rights were all won through struggle. As Thomas Paine once said, “Rights are not gifts from one man to another, nor from one class of men to another.” Rights are inalienable and not granted by the political powers that be. As the song says, “You’ll use your Bill of Rights ’til your struggles are won!”
