The Sound and Recording Audio work in Fellowship Hall was by David Yandle. Post Production Audio & Video work was contributed by Vic Sadot. Now it’s posted to the internet! We need YOU to help us get this information and these links distributed! Note: Every photo on this page is linked to another related site full of information or music.

This video is 58 minutes in length and it will be set for Creative Commons free download so that it can be used in a non-profit manner by activists to schedule it on their local Public Access Cable TV stations. It is indeed educational in that it deals with a subject avoided by the corporate media, the hugely profitable and extremely dangerous nuclear arms race. Born out of fear of nuclear mass destruction, the Peace Symbol has become an essential part of our Peace Movement. How was it created? Who did it? What was the moment of historical context in which this now well-known symbol was created?
gerald-herbert-holton_21feb1958-design_nuclear-disarmament_berkeley_59th_birthday_of_peace-symbol
It was Gerald Herbert Holten who created the Peace Symbol using navy semaphore flag signals as the basis for the design. The Peace Symbol was first used on February 21, 1958 in support of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in a march of 10,000 people from London to Aldermaston. Gerald Holten had been a conscientious objector during World War II. He was a graduate of the Royal College of Art.

Poet Arnie Passman and the Social Justice Committee of the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists invited poets, singer-songwriters, and comedians to celebrate the 59th Birthday of the Peace Symbol! The history of the birth of the “Band the Bomb” movement in the UK and the need for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to be pressed forward are discussed.
hiroshima-ground-zero_us-army_berkeley-celebrates-peace_vic-sadotThe Berkeley Celebration of the 59th Birthday of the Peace Symbol was on “Presidents’ Day”, Monday, Feb 20, 2017. Veteran BFUU Social Justice Committee activist Cynthia Jean Johnson welcomed the small audience who came to Fellowship Hall on that rainy day.

The obligations of signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the need for all nuclear countries to sign and participate, are explained in this video.
mordechai-vanunu_berkeley-celebrates-peace-symbol_vic-sadotThe gathering was fortunate to have a formidable poet like Frances L. Hillyard. Frances contributed several thought and emotion provoking poems, including poems about The Statue of Liberty; the view of a woman suffering the violence and turmoil in the city of Jenin in Palestine; a revolutionary salute to Mumia Abu Jamal; and the charming and hopeful “Dove of Light”. A separate 10 minute video of her performance has been posted!

The group has protest rallies outside the Japanese Consulate in San Francisco at 3 pm on the 11th of every month since the nuclear catastrophe first happened on March 11, 2011. Since March 11, 2017 will be the 6th anniversary of the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history there should be a larger than usual turn-out. What’s more is that the emergency is an ongoing radioactive disaster that continues to contaminate land, air, and sea, and continues to threaten all living creatures that depend on these elements of nature for sustenance.

Ahmed Alomary manages to capture the beauty in the city and countryside around Jenin. But the Zionist expansion is constantly pressing into their territories with colonizers who are euphemistically called “settlers”. And the IDF is always nearby to enforce “The Law In These Parts” (An Israeli film that was screened at the annual Jewish Film Festival in Berkeley, California).

BERKELEY CALLING BLOG: Buffalo Roadshow Report! Inspiring, deep, awesome!

The Buffalo Field Campaign Roadshow brought co-founder Mike Meese to Fellowship Hall in Berkeley, CA along with event organizers Karen Pickett of Earth First! and Vic Sadot of the BFUU Social Justice Committee.

Musically, the 2016 BFC Roadshow featured two acts: Mignon Geli and Karaj Lost-Coast. Karaj Lost-Coast opened with a charming original composition to guitar called “Headlands”. It is a reflective patchwork of memoirs beginning with how odd it seemed to have wild bison in Golden Gate Park in the heart of San Francisco.

mignon-geli_flute_4-seasons-vic-sadot_screenshot-2016-buffalo-field-campaign-roadshow_berkeley-ca

The headliner was Mignon Geli on the Native American flute. Mignon gave an articulate and heartfelt explanation of the roots of each song, be it original or traditional or experimental, such as “Native Blues”, “Stampede”, or songs from the Nisenan tribe of the Nevada and California hills.

As a long-time lover of ballads and broadsides, I love the way some people like Phil Ochs, Buffie Sainte-Marie, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Joan Baez, Patrick Sky, Peter La Farge Patrick Sky -The Ballad of Ira Hayes (Peter La Farge) and countless others, so effectively set up their song for delivery. It’s a talent that Mignon Geli has, in addition to her soulful instrumental talents. Matter of factly, she’s been heard to say: “The Black Hills are NOT for sale!” See her BlackHillsAreNotForSale.org biographical link below if you like these performances and if this multi-dimensional cause strikes a chord with you!

After Vic Sadot, an activist with the Social Justice Committee does a welcoming and promotion of upcoming SJC October 2016 events, Karen Pickett takes the stage to explain the vision and modus operandi of the Buffalo Field Campaign.

The Buffalo Field Campaign “Roadshow” came rolling through the SF Bay Area with founder Mike Mease presenting his stories and videos from years of engaging this project to protect and preserve the wild buffalo and the environment we all need to survive and thrive. Part of Mike’s talk was captured to a cell phone video, which is posted to this “Social Justice in the Heart of Berkeley” YouTube channel.

“Jill Stein calls for new investigation into 9/11” (1:00) Newsy YouTube Channel. Published on Sep 10, 2016: Green Party candidate Jill Stein says there should be a new independent investigation into the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, has been shown to possibly be complicit in the cover-up of 9/11 because on 9/11 he, like news anchors Dan Rather and Peter Jennings, Trump stated that only controlled demolitions could have caused the steel-framed World Trade Center Towers to disintegrate in 10 seconds. In the case of building 7, it fell later in the afternoon at free fall speed in 7 seconds. WTC owner, Larry Silverstein, Likud Party leader Netanyahu confidant, said on a PBS show that he and the NYC Fire Chief agreed to “pull it”. Last year Silverstein revealed in a Tel Aviv speech that he had plans to rebuild Building 7 in the year 2000!

Trump saw on 9/11/2001: “bombs were used” on WTC in the planes that hit, according to Trump (3:52) TruthMakesPeace Published on Sept. 16, 2016: “Donald Trump saw the same day that bombs must have been used on the WTC towers on 9/11/2001. He quickly knew that the official Bush Story of 9/11 (BS911) was a lie. From his experience building steel sky scrapers, he knew they were built to be strong, even against a jet. He stated to the reporter that bombs must also have been involved. Donald showed what a nice guy he is, as he called his competitor Larry Silverstein to see if he was ok. He did not suspect Larry let 3000 of his tenants die for over $4 billion from insurance”.

Jill Stein Proved Me Wrong by Kevin Ryan at DigWithin Blog, author of “Another Nineteen: Investigating Legitimate 9/11 Suspects”

kevin-robert-ryan_another-19_book-cover
My last blog post was wrong. As of a week ago, it does matter who is elected president. That’s because one of the candidates has openly called for a new investigation into the crimes of 9/11.

In a recent statement on the subject, Jill Stein made the following important comments and promises:

“The families and friends of those who were murdered on 9/11 deserve justice. They also deserve to know the truth.”

“Under our administration a new inquiry would have access to the considerable body of responsible independent research that has emerged over the last 15 years.”

“We would create an independent 9/11 Commission, not one dominated by members with an interest in protecting the reputation and careers of foreign affairs and intelligence communities.”

“It’s time for a full accounting of what happened, and an end to the misguided post-9/11 wars that are actually making us less safe, not more safe.”

In May, a national poll showed that, “An unprecedented 91 percent of voters 28 or younger favor having an independent on the ballot, and 65 percent of respondents are willing to support a candidate who isn’t Clinton or Trump.”

The Debate in the Woods

“The Debate in the Woods” was between Jack Gescheidt of The Tree Spirit Project vs Bob Strayer of the Claremont Canyon Conservancy. The monitor was Bill Lazarus.

East Bay Area Woods and Nature Preservation Activists gathered in Claremont Canyon Preserve on July 24, 2016 to hear Jack Gescheidt of The Tree Spirit Project (center) versus Bob Strayer of the Claremont Canyon Conservancy (right).

The debate was friendly and respectful. It covered numerous issues related to the plan created by UC Berkeley, City of Oakland, and the East Bay Regional Parks, and the Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) to cut several hundred thousand trees, to spray herbicide to prevent re-growth, and to create grasslands instead of re-planting other trees. The Hills Conservation Network, a coalition of a number of civic groups, has filed a law suit to stop the plan. This debate was a reflection of two persons with different philosophies and understandings about the impact of the plan on the living creatures and plants, as well as the soil and the watershed of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The TreeSpirit Project is an environmental art project devoted to raising awareness of the crucial role trees and forests in our lives, both globally and also personally. The global and the personal are inextricably linked. TreeSpirit’s centerpiece is the world’s largest collection of photographs of naked, vulnerable humans communing with trees, created by Founder and photographer Jack Gescheidt with hundreds of volunteer participants.  All are tree and nature lovers who want to attract public and media attention to how much we need forests to mitigate climate change — and to touch our souls. Click on the photo below to watch a short video titled “The Forest and the Sea of Stumps”, an excellent review of the alarming plans to cut over 400,000 trees in the Bay Area Hills (7:44) Published on June 3, 2016 at Magmalavas YouTube Channel. A Film by Doug Prose; Music by Machinimasound & Joe Hartnett. Now in “The Politics of Trees & The Preservation of Natural Areas” playlist at SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE HEART OF BERKELEY YouTube Channel.

Hills Conservation Network

Stop the Deforestation of the Berkeley/Oakland Hills! UC and the City of Oakland plan to use federal disaster mitigation funds to clear-cut ALL of its tall trees in the hills. They are targeting eucalyptus, pines, and acacia for complete eradication, not because of a fire risk, but instead to clear the land for facilities expansion and to continue to allow UC to avoid spending its own money to maintain its wild land properties. They have dismissed proposed “species neutral” fire mitigation strategies that would be cheaper, would use far fewer herbicides, and would be far more effective in lessening fire risk because such strategies wouldn’t accomplish this hidden agenda. inquiries@hillsconservationnetwork.org

Click on the photo to read Dan Grassetti’s article on the cutting of these trees by UC Berkeley before the release of the environmental impact study in August 2014. The Hills Conservation Network has filed a lawsuit to stop the clear-cutting of trees under the notion that they are an “invasive species” and need to be eliminated by a chemical war on them. Dan Grassetti is the founder of the Hills Conservation Network.

The Hills Conservation Network (HCN) filed suit to prevent the funding and implementation of these projects on March 6, 2015.  Below is the press release announcing HCN’s suit.  Please contact the Hills Conservation Network if you wish to contribute to the cost of this suit:    http://www.hillsconservationnetwork.org/HillsConservation3/Blog/Blog.html

SF Mime Troupe Video by Vic Sadot

The San Francisco Mime Troupe kicked off its Summer 2016 Season to a large crowd in Berkeley’s Cedar-Rose Park on July 2 and 3. Then they packed everything up and did a show in Dolores Park in San Francisco on July 4. “Schooled” (6:34) is the title of the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s Summer 2016 musical play.

Vic Sadot created a short  video (6:33) made from photos and short clips at the end of the show on July 3 at Cedar Rose Park. It has been posted at Vic Sadot YouTube and Truth Troubadour YouTube. The lyrics are full of one line gems that pack a lot of impact in the whole context of the storyline. Ira Marlowe runs a little Berkeley club called The Monkey House, and he is one of the most prolific songwriters in the SF Bay Area. Daniel Savio is the Musical Director for the SFMT Summer Tour. Try to remember to get the free flyer “Schooled Lyrics”, which is separate from the program. Get both! You won’t regret it!

It was another great combination of script writing, comedic talent, and clever song crafting. They pass out a program with all the credits and also a Song Lryics flyer for this year’s play called “Schooled” written by Michael Gene Sullivan and Eugenie Chan. Directed by Michael Sullivan. Music & Lyrics by Ira Marlowe. Musical Direction by Daniel Savio. In “The Campaign”candidate Babbit is a Trump-like boastful character derides his oppostion saying he is: “Up against some mommy whose kid can’t make the grade… and some aging commie on the corner. Vote for Babbit! Vote for Babbit! Here’s your chance, now grab it!” Candidate Ethel retorts: This country needs citizens, awake and aware! Standing up to power and that class of billionaires! Our schools need teachers, respected and inspired! Our kids need to be taught, and not just wired!”

Will Durkee plays guitar and bass in the 3 piece SFMT Band. The actors and Troupe members go into the crowd after each play to solicit support. Their political message is able to get to the root of our social problems because they do not accept funding from corporations. The SFMT BAND is Will Durkee on guitar and bass; Dominic Moisant on percussion; and Daniel Savio on keyboards.

The key to the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s independence and artistic integrity is their San Francisco Bay Area fan-based funding. They do strategic grant fundraising that also supports the many projects they engage in. At the SFMT Merchandise Booth at every show many attractive souvenir items are available. I went for the T-Shirt this year. There is also a volunteer sign-up sheet at the merchandise booth, and you can subscribe to this unique SF Bay Area cultural project at their website. After the show, you can have a chat with the cast and crew. But on days when they have to bust everything down and haul it to the next show, they may seem weary and in a hurry. Able bodied volunteers are appreciated in most cases (lol)…

Frederson-J-Babbit_mocks-Cedar-Rose-Park-crowd_6-03-16-screenshot-vic-sadot

The San Francisco Mime Troupe is indeed a precious example of community theatrical resistance to war and social injustice as well as being a participatory education vehicle for citizen empowerment. Come laugh and enjoy the sunshine as you contemplate the great difference between being “educated” to be capable of doing the critical thinking needed of citizens in a democracy; and being warehoused and “schooled” to be a pawn in the plans of the super rich psycho-patholigical predatory class out to privatize every commonwealth resource and institution on the planet. SF Mime Trouple may be a rag tag organization, but their mission is to make all the difference in the world. So…

“What are you’s gonna do about it?!!!” (Fredersen J. Babbit – Corporate School Board Candidate in “Schooled” by Michael Gene Sullivan and Eugenie Chan)
