Nuclear Heartland USA Video of John LaForge Lecture on the Updated Book Nuclear Heartland by Nukewatch

“Nuclear Heartland”, the book, was first published in 1988. It listed the locations of all land-based nuclear missile silos in the United States. John LaForge of Nukewatch updated and republished a 2015 report on the status of such land-based nuclear silos in the United States.

John LaForge presented a power-point lecture on the book and the nuclear weapons abolition movement on 10-13-16 in Fellowship Hall. The 58 minute video “Nuclear Heartland USA” was made by Vic Sadot from an audio recording by Sound Engineer David Yandle. It was published to “Social Justice in the Heart of Berkeley” YouTube on March 29, 2017.

John LaForge of Nukewatch was accompanied on this speaking tour with German nuclear abolitionist activist Marion Küpker, who represents GAAA, Gewaltfreie Aktion Atomwaffen Abschaffen (Nonviolent Action to Abolish Nuclear Weapons). It is a German organization dedicated to the total abolition of nuclear weapons.

Since many of us had not heard that a historic vote in the UN General Assembly was coming up on Oct 27, 2016, we learned about it from John LaForge. The vote was overwhelming to make 2017 the year to push the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty forward through UN sponsored conferences: 123 In Favor; 38 Against; 16 Abstentions. The vote was something of an act of defiance toward the Security Council, and almost all nuclear-armed powers voted no, with some notable abstentions. The mainstream media buried the story as if it was not a significant event in human history!

The outcome of the upcoming Oct 27, 2017 UN General Assembly Vote for talks to move the NPT Treaty forward was presaged by John LaForge on Oct 13, 2016 in Berkeley. We include information of that vote with the advantage of releasing the video in late March 2017. The US, UK, and other nuclear powers boycotted the March 2017 conference. Did your media even cover the crucial talks to ban nuclear weapons from the Earth?

The next NPT UN conference is scheduled for July 2017! Make your country attend the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty talks about the signatory obligations and the need to press this issue vital to human survival forward. Remember that previous negotiations did lead to significant affirmed nuclear disarmament and a reduction of tensions.  This was moving forward until GW Bush unilaterally withdrew the US from the ABM Treaty with Russia! Making the Middle East a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone is one of the immediate priorities of the countries pressing forward and of many nuclear abolition activists of many nations.America-sends-nuclear-bombers-to-Russian-Borders_The-National-Interest

Cynthia Jean Johson welcomed everyone to Historic Fellowship Hall in Berkeley. Author-activist Cecile Pineda did the introduction of John LaForge of Nukewatch. BFUU Social Justice Committee activists Ingrid Kepler-May and James Beatty appear in the Q&A session. Ingrid Kepler-May is in the Q&A segment at around 49:10 of the 58 minute video. She is in a discussion with speaker John LaForge about the effects of US use of depleted uranium in weapons and armor, particularly how it contaminates the environment and causes birth defects in Iraqi babies. Ingrid witnessed these results first-hand on a visit to hospitals in Iraq. The 58 minutes video was made by Vic Sadot from an audio recording by David Yandle of a John LaForge NukeWatch Book Update presentation by John in Fellowship Hall, Berkeley, CA on Oct. 13, 2016. The event was sponsored by BFUU Social Justice Committee.

There are two a 6 minute excepted videos also posted at YouTube, one of Marion Küpker speaking about the German Peace movement, NATO, Russia, and the situation in Syria; one of the Q&A session with Ingrid Kepler-May talking about where the nuclear arms race is today and about the use of depleted uranium by the United States in weapons and war machinery armour, which when blasted to dust causes birth defects in children and cancers in others who come into contact with the radioactive dust.

It was a stunning and memorable update presentation by John LaForge to celebrate the 2015 re-publication of “Nuclear Heartland”! The book was first published in 1988 to let Americans know where the nuke silos are, and that they make you less secure in contradiction of the stated nuclear “deterrence” goal. This only becomes apparent after you understand the war profiteering and the unacceptable risks involved in nuclear radiation, and the climate of fear needed to promote the arms race.

Video of Berkeley Peace Symbol Event Posted to YouTube as Public Access HD

The Berkeley “Ban the Bomb!” Video is out! The 2nd Edition of the Berkeley Peace Symbol commemoration has lots of cool special effects! Slightly re-titled, you can find it listed as “Berkeley Celebrates the 59th Birthday of the Peace Symbol” at the YouTube channel called “SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE HEART OF BERKELEY”.

The Sound and Recording Audio work in Fellowship Hall was by David Yandle. Post Production Audio & Video work was contributed by Vic Sadot. Now it’s posted to the internet! We need YOU to help us get this information and these links distributed! Note: Every photo on this page is linked to another related site full of information or music.

This video is 58 minutes in length and it will be set for Creative Commons free download so that it can be used in a non-profit manner by activists to schedule it on their local Public Access Cable TV stations. It is indeed educational in that it deals with a subject avoided by the corporate media, the hugely profitable and extremely dangerous nuclear arms race. Born out of fear of nuclear mass destruction, the Peace Symbol has become an essential part of our Peace Movement. How was it created? Who did it? What was the moment of historical context in which this now well-known symbol was created?
gerald-herbert-holton_21feb1958-design_nuclear-disarmament_berkeley_59th_birthday_of_peace-symbol
It was Gerald Herbert Holten who created the Peace Symbol using navy semaphore flag signals as the basis for the design. The Peace Symbol was first used on February 21, 1958 in support of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in a march of 10,000 people from London to Aldermaston. Gerald Holten had been a conscientious objector during World War II. He was a graduate of the Royal College of Art.

mordechai-vanunu_berkeley-celebrates-peace-symbol_vic-sadotThe gathering was fortunate to have a formidable poet like Frances L. Hillyard. Frances contributed several thought and emotion provoking poems, including poems about The Statue of Liberty; the view of a woman suffering the violence and turmoil in the city of Jenin in Palestine; a revolutionary salute to Mumia Abu Jamal; and the charming and hopeful “Dove of Light”. A separate 10 minute video of her performance has been posted!

The group has protest rallies outside the Japanese Consulate in San Francisco at 3 pm on the 11th of every month since the nuclear catastrophe first happened on March 11, 2011. Since March 11, 2017 will be the 6th anniversary of the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history there should be a larger than usual turn-out. What’s more is that the emergency is an ongoing radioactive disaster that continues to contaminate land, air, and sea, and continues to threaten all living creatures that depend on these elements of nature for sustenance.

Ahmed Alomary manages to capture the beauty in the city and countryside around Jenin. But the Zionist expansion is constantly pressing into their territories with colonizers who are euphemistically called “settlers”. And the IDF is always nearby to enforce “The Law In These Parts” (An Israeli film that was screened at the annual Jewish Film Festival in Berkeley, California).

Vic Sadot Releases 4th CD on CD Baby

“Truth Troubadour” is the title of Vic Sadot’s latest CD with 18 songs. Truth Troubadour is the most acoustic and reflective CD of the 4 CD’s that he has posted since first teaming with DiscMakers and CD Baby in 1997. Seventeen of the 18 songs on Truth Troubadour are duos with Vic on guitar and vocals, and some piano accordion on several songs. Eric Golub contributes his formidable talents on various stringed instruments: viola, violin, and 2 ukuleles. It’s a mix of broadside ballads and sweet love songs. Truth Troubadour was published to CD Baby on Dec 2, 2016.

The first press announcement was at VicSadot.com calling for reviews!

“Truth Troubadour CD Is Ready For Review!”

Left My Mind is the lead-off song and the only rocker on the CD. Like Lori, a gentle poetic love song, Left My Mind was written by Joe Sadot, who passed in 1978 at age 26. Left My Mind was recorded in Delaware with Rob Sadot, Dean Banks, and Rob Hunter at Rob’s Tune Room Studios. Everything else was recorded at Ancient Owl Audio (formerly Robot Envy Studio) with Sammy Fielding doing all of the sound recording and mixing work in Berkeley, CA. Here we have Rob Sadot recording “Full Spectrum Dominance” in Berkeley.

rob-sadot_full-spectrum-domance_robot-envy-studio_photo-vic-sadot

The 18 songs cover many topics and emotions. The reflective love songs are titled In the Harbor of Love, Lori, and Dearest Lady. The original broadside ballad topical songs are well-researched on timely topics, such as Full Spectrum Dominance, An Act of State: The Execution of Martin Luther King, Selling Futures, Courage To Resist – Free Chelsea Manning, The Kidnapping Coup (Haiti 2004), and No Nuke Blues Fukushima Update.

Full Spectrum Dominance is of those songs that may take on greater significance and meaning as time goes by. The term is used by the US military and political sectors in reference to their goal of global hegemony on land, air, sea, outerspace, and cyberspace.

The line that says, “Beware of those who joke about sending in the drones!” is a reference to President Obama’s joke at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, May 1, 2010. It was as callous and crude as President Bush’s joke skit at the same dinner during his administration when he was joking about looking for “weapons of mass destruction” in the country he massively destroyed for being under suspicion of having them, Iraq.

Psychopaths in powerful positions seem to not have the empathic abilities that normal people have in society. Michael Moore reported on it here: Obama Jokes About Killing Jonas Brothers With Predator Drones (00:29) mmflint channel“The Jonas Brothers are here. (Applause.) They’re out there somewhere. Sasha and Malia are huge fans. But, boys, don’t get any ideas. (Laughter.) I have two words for you, predator drones. (Laughter) You will never see it coming. (Laughter.) You think I’m joking. (Laughter.)

This song was written by Vic Sadot for the 4-10-11 visit of Bruce Gagnon to speak at Fellowship Hall in Berkeley, CA. Bruce is the founder of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. The line-up for this October 2012 session was Vic Sadot on vocals and acoustic guitar, Rob Sadot on electric guitar, and Eric Golub is on violin. “Full Spectrum Dominance makes us all the “enemy”!

“We’ve got socialism for the rich; competition for the rest…

What kind of social system leaves so many dispossessed? …

If we should ever take it in our hearts to share this great Land of the Free,

It would be like Woody Guthrie said: This land was made for you and me!”

See Woody Guthrie Center to learn more about his legacy in American folk music.

The Kidnapping Coup is a broadside ballad that tells the story of the US military intervention in Haiti in 2004 to overthrow the elected government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the Lavalas Party. He and his wife were actually blindfolded and taken to Africa on a US military jet!

BERKELEY CALLING BLOG: Buffalo Roadshow Report! Inspiring, deep, awesome!

The Buffalo Field Campaign Roadshow brought co-founder Mike Meese to Fellowship Hall in Berkeley, CA along with event organizers Karen Pickett of Earth First! and Vic Sadot of the BFUU Social Justice Committee.

Musically, the 2016 BFC Roadshow featured two acts: Mignon Geli and Karaj Lost-Coast. Karaj Lost-Coast opened with a charming original composition to guitar called “Headlands”. It is a reflective patchwork of memoirs beginning with how odd it seemed to have wild bison in Golden Gate Park in the heart of San Francisco.

mignon-geli_flute_4-seasons-vic-sadot_screenshot-2016-buffalo-field-campaign-roadshow_berkeley-ca

The headliner was Mignon Geli on the Native American flute. Mignon gave an articulate and heartfelt explanation of the roots of each song, be it original or traditional or experimental, such as “Native Blues”, “Stampede”, or songs from the Nisenan tribe of the Nevada and California hills.

As a long-time lover of ballads and broadsides, I love the way some people like Phil Ochs, Buffie Sainte-Marie, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Joan Baez, Patrick Sky, Peter La Farge Patrick Sky -The Ballad of Ira Hayes (Peter La Farge) and countless others, so effectively set up their song for delivery. It’s a talent that Mignon Geli has, in addition to her soulful instrumental talents. Matter of factly, she’s been heard to say: “The Black Hills are NOT for sale!” See her BlackHillsAreNotForSale.org biographical link below if you like these performances and if this multi-dimensional cause strikes a chord with you!

The Buffalo Field Campaign “Roadshow” came rolling through the SF Bay Area with founder Mike Mease presenting his stories and videos from years of engaging this project to protect and preserve the wild buffalo and the environment we all need to survive and thrive. Part of Mike’s talk was captured to a cell phone video, which is posted to this “Social Justice in the Heart of Berkeley” YouTube channel.

“Schooled” Excerpt from SF Mime Troupe: Education. It’s like the weather: everyone has an opinion but nobody does anything about it. That’s how Livina Jones feels about her son Tom’s new school, Eleanor Roosevelt High. With it’s old textbooks, crumbling classrooms, and racist treatment of kids just like hers Livina believes Roosevelt is exactly the sort of school that can benefit from a little free-market common sense. The nanny-state government has failed to see students as individuals, and failed to give them the real-world skills they’ll need to get ahead. So who says it isn’t time for some big money, for-profit schooling?
