Thanks to people all over the world, but especially people on Facebook like Shannon Hammock with her Celebrating Phil Ochs’ 75th Birthday page, and also the group page called 1,000,000 Strong for Phil Ochs, there is considerable interest in recognizing the work of American singer-songwriter Phil Ochs on the passing of his 75th birthday on or near to December 19, 2015.

I’ve heard of events all over the country being organized. I’m organizing such an event in Berkeley with singer-songwriter Hali Hammer at Historic Fellowship Hall on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 7 pm at 1924 Cedar Street in Berkeley..

I met and interviewed Phil Ochs in 1973 and just got around to making a 2015 video based on that old reel-to-reel audio tape from WGTB when Phil did a week of shows at The Cellar Door in Washington, DC. (See link below!) Phil stayed at my apartment that week. So I had lots of opportunities to talk with Phil, but I never saw him in person again. Phil Ochs was born in El Paso, Texas on Dec 19, 1940, and unfortunately, he died by suicide on April 9, 1976. Phil Ochs’ songs were unique and thought provoking, not only in dealing with political topics of the time, but in dealing with the political system in a more deeply revealing way. His philosophical songs, such as Changes, When I’m Gone, Cross My Heart, and There But for Fortune, reached people in a deeper and more long lasting way than most songs that come down the pike. In the tradition of Broadside Magazine, edited by Phil’s avid supporters, Sis Cunningham and Gordon Friesen, Phil preferred to call himself a “topical singer”.

The Social Justice Committee of the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists has reserved Historic Fellowship Hall for Dec 19, 2015. We’re sending out a call for people to do one or two songs, or 10 minutes. The performers and songs will be listed in a simple program like we did for the Berkeley Protest Fest with Country Joe McDonald on Aug 15, 2015.

We are looking for people to sing (1) Phil Ochs covers; (2) Phil Ochs tributes; (3) and original songs that the artist feels were inspired in them by Phil Ochs. They can submit an mp3 to me at this email broadsideballadeer@gmail.com

If your song submission is selected, then for publicity we would then need a close-up photo, a short bio of 2 or 3 sentences about you and your music, your website and booking contact info if you have such and want it listed in the program. We hope to hear from talented people who love Phil Ochs who want to sing out in Berkeley on Dec 19th! Vic Sadot
