Thanks to people all over the world, but especially people on Facebook like Shannon Hammock with her Celebrating Phil Ochs’ 75th Birthday page, and also the group page called 1,000,000 Strong for Phil Ochs, there is considerable interest in recognizing the work of American singer-songwriter Phil Ochs on the passing of his 75th birthday on or near to December 19, 2015.

I’ve heard of events all over the country being organized. I’m organizing such an event in Berkeley with singer-songwriter Hali Hammer at Historic Fellowship Hall on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 7 pm at 1924 Cedar Street in Berkeley..

I met and interviewed Phil Ochs in 1973 and just got around to making a 2015 video based on that old reel-to-reel audio tape from WGTB when Phil did a week of shows at The Cellar Door in Washington, DC. (See link below!) Phil stayed at my apartment that week. So I had lots of opportunities to talk with Phil, but I never saw him in person again. Phil Ochs was born in El Paso, Texas on Dec 19, 1940, and unfortunately, he died by suicide on April 9, 1976. Phil Ochs’ songs were unique and thought provoking, not only in dealing with political topics of the time, but in dealing with the political system in a more deeply revealing way. His philosophical songs, such as Changes, When I’m Gone, Cross My Heart, and There But for Fortune, reached people in a deeper and more long lasting way than most songs that come down the pike. In the tradition of Broadside Magazine, edited by Phil’s avid supporters, Sis Cunningham and Gordon Friesen, Phil preferred to call himself a “topical singer”.

The Social Justice Committee of the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists has reserved Historic Fellowship Hall for Dec 19, 2015. We’re sending out a call for people to do one or two songs, or 10 minutes. The performers and songs will be listed in a simple program like we did for the Berkeley Protest Fest with Country Joe McDonald on Aug 15, 2015.

We are looking for people to sing (1) Phil Ochs covers; (2) Phil Ochs tributes; (3) and original songs that the artist feels were inspired in them by Phil Ochs. They can submit an mp3 to me at this email broadsideballadeer@gmail.com

If your song submission is selected, then for publicity we would then need a close-up photo, a short bio of 2 or 3 sentences about you and your music, your website and booking contact info if you have such and want it listed in the program. We hope to hear from talented people who love Phil Ochs who want to sing out in Berkeley on Dec 19th! Vic Sadot

Libya: From Africa’s Wealthiest Democracy under Gaddafi, to US-NATO Sponsored Terrorist Haven

This is a re-blog of “Libya: From Africa’s Wealthiest Democracy Under Gaddafi to US NATO Sponsored Terrorist Haven” at Uprooted Palestinians WordPress Blog 10-24-15 by Garikai Chengu, a scholar at Harvard University. First, here are some “Berkeley Calling” comments, and then some more excellent sources to share with you who care for truth, justice, and a genuine peace. May you prevail!

Libya-Green-Revolution-flag_we-will-not-surrender-2014-640x664

This Uprooted Palestinians Blog details the gruesome truth about the US-NATO-Zionist-Israel-Monarchist-Gulf-States conspiracy to destroy Libya’s leadership of Africa toward a new powerful unity and its own banking system to launch a new era of African prosperity similar to that already achieved by Gaddafi’s Libya. Look at these news headlines that this blog documents as they celebrated the death and further demonized the Honorable Brother Leader Muammar Gaddafi. This propaganda by those who lie, destabilize, bomb, occupy, torture, and murder was all made possible by the lies of 9/11 and the trauma conditioning done by western leaders and their media on the people of the west! The official story is BIG LIE. And the 9/11 Commission Report authored by professional myth maintenance professor Zelikow is centrally based on torture testimony. So, just like the demonization of Colonel Gaddafi, the historic story of Libya is also a grotesque lie. Who benefits? Who suffers? Who cares? Who will overcome?

Like Malcolm X warned us long ago: “If you are not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” From my studies, it seems that this treachery has brought about the truly corrupt and degenerate situation of the world today. This song, The Ballad of Mohamed Atta, and this blog, both question the Big Lies. There are links provided to the sources that inspired this song that ends with this verse:

Do you know what they’re planning to do in your name?
In the name of “Democracy”, it’s a sham and a shame!
‘Cause all of this killing comes out of the claims…
Of the “Official Story” and whoever it blames!

The Truth About The War On Libya: Government Lies Revealed A Government Conspiracy (2011) (2:01:39)

DESTROYING LIBYA AND WORLD ORDER: The Three Decade U.S. Campaign To Terminate the Qaddafi Revolution by Francis A. Boyle at Clarity Press.

Muammar Gadaffi Speaks Truth To The UN 2009 (NEW Translation) – (1:35:04) Speech To United Nations on September 23, 2009 Session Presided by the Honorable Muammar Gadaffi at the time of his Presidency of the African Union. Published to humaniti YouTube Channel. Now video #3 in “Greatest Speeches for Truth, Justice & Peace” playlist at SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE HEART OF BERKELEY. Gadaffi reminds the world that most countries did not exist when the UN was founded and the UN operational system pre-dated their existence since they were still in a struggle against colonialism, which was weakened by WWII between the imperialist nations. Gaddaffi points to the contradictions of the Charter’s proclamation of “equality” and the Security Council having veto over the General Assembly, plus the failure of the organization set up to preserve the peace doing nothing in its 50 years to stop wars started by the Security Council members. Keeping his focus squarely on Security Council dynamics, he said that the 15-member body practiced “security feudalism” for those who had a protected veto seat. “It should be called the terror council”, he said, underscoring that terrorism could exist in many forms.

Libya and the Big Lie: Using Human Rights Organizations to Launch Wars by Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya in Global Research, September 29, 2011 while the NATO bombing of Libya under legal cover of the UN “No Fly Zone” resolution. Libya lost thousands of soldiers and civilians in defense of their nation. They lost the first-world infrastructure that took them decades to build under their Green Revolution.

The Truth of Libya (Finally) Goes Mainstream by Eric Draitser in New Eastern Outlook 6-22-14 Excerpt: “One of the most highly regarded politico-academic institutions in the US – the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University – has issued a report which undermines the established narrative of the war in Libya, laying bare the cold, hard reality of what Libya was at the outset of the war, what really happened in the early days, and what Libya has become today. Of course, responsibility for the tragic and lasting effects of that war should be laid at the feet of Obama, Cameron, Sarkozy, and the other participants, in addition to those media outlets and NGOs that deliberately spread lies about the reality on the ground in Libya. All must be held accountable.”

Libya

EDITORIAL STATEMENT: October (2011), marks the four-year anniversary of the disappearance of Libya’s leader, Muammar Gaddafi, and the decline into chaos of one of Africa’s greatest nations.
The position of this network is (and always was) that brother Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, born the 7 June 1942, never physically died: he is alive, he will live forever in the hearts of millions of people in Libya, in Africa and in the whole world, and will remain forever the worst nightmare for Libya’s enemies, that one after the other will be overwhelmed by their evil actions, and by themselves and between themselves each other they will be eliminated and eternally damned.
